General Information

Çankaya University Preparatory School (CUPS) aims to provide the students whose level of English is below proficiency level with basic language skills so that they can effectively pursue their undergraduate studies at the University where the medium of instruction is English (except for the law faculty). To achieve this mission, the school runs a student-centered program placing emphasis on various language tasks which promote primarily communicative and academic language skills.

The school envisions to create autonomous learners and to equip its students with competence in English, research skills, critical and creative thinking skills, to enable them to be successful in their future academic, professional and daily lives, to help them keep up with the changes happening all around the world, and to shape them to become sensitive and responsible individuals by providing technology-based qualitative instruction within European standards.

In the University, CUPS plays a vital role in providing intensive English instruction for those students admitted to the University but who are not yet proficient enough in English to enroll in their departments. Thus, they are required to study approximately 25 hours per week (depending on the level) for an academic year in the preparatory school to raise their level up to the basic minimum required to enter their departments. Those who do not pass the proficiency exam may have the oppurtunity to attend the summer school program in order to retake the proficiency exam in August or must repeat the preparatory school year to be able to continue their education at the University. All newly registered students must take a ‘proficiency exam’ before starting their university or vocational school programs.

CUPS offers four levels of courses: 1, 2, 3 and 4. All levels contain information and applications to provide students with reading, writing, listening, speaking, and learning skills. The school program consists of two academic terms and four periods. The total education period of all three levels is determined by an academic calendar approved every year by the university senate. Books to be used for each level are announced by the School at the beginning of each year.

Approximately 40 teachers are currently instructing at CUPS to provide quality instruction. The school aims to become a learning organization through promoting professional development studies, collaborative teaching and learning projects, and providing necessary training programs.
